Nissan Silvia S15 Review Australia

We have shed light and discussed many of the greatest and iconic cars that have been produced. We have looked at SUVs, classics, and even minicars. Previously, we also saw the Nissan Silvia S14, and how that is one of the finest drift cars today. It would be a shame, therefore, to miss out on the Nissan Silvia S15. The vehicle has earned the title of being the greatest car of all times when it comes to drifting.

The Nissan Silvia is immensely popular in many countries. Especially in Japan and Australia, where people love to drift. Alas, that cannot be said of the US, where the car is banned. But in Tokyo, you will see people drifting to schools, people drifting around small corners, and so on. The S15 even took the limelight in the Formula Drift event.

There is no doubt that the Nissan Silvia S15 has a visual appeal that surpasses many cars. Even though the car is almost two decades old, it has not lost its appeal nor looks. The car is also lightweight, lighter than a Honda S2000, which is saying something. Read on our Nissan Silvia S15 review to find out what makes this car such revered.

The Nissan Silvia is a long-running range of sport coupes that have been around for many years now. The cars are based on the Nissan S platform. Even though the recent models have a shared chassis with some of the other cars produced by Nissan. The European models are known as the 200SX while the North American ones are called the 240SX.  Their main competitors around the World include Mazda MX-6, Isuzu Impulse, Honda Prelude. And of course the Mitsubishi Eclipse.

The story of the Nissan Silvia started in 1964 when a handmade coupe was revealed at the Tokyo Motor Show. It was loosely based on the Fairlady convertible but was meticulously built with great looks. The early model was called the Datsun 1500, which was also known as the Silvia CSP311. And thus, the legend of one of the most iconic cars was born.

Nissan S15 Silvia:

The Nissan Silvia S15 was launched in 1999, which saw a ball-bearing turbocharger upgrade. There was also an improved engine management system which resulted in a 247 bhp of power. The Nissan Silvia S15 included an overall aggressive styling, both exterior and interior. That gave the car a more modern look, in par with current design trends.

The previous Nissan Silvia had body dimensions that surpassed the Japanese compact class just slightly. This time, the car saw some reductions in the dimensions to comply with the compact class stats. This was a major factor which had affected the sales of the previous model.

The Nissan S15 Silvia was initially launched with two models, called the Spec-S and the Spec-R. Both the models offered an Aero variant. The Aero variant included side skirts and a large rear wing. The Nissan Silvia S15 was sold in Japan and in the Australian as well as the New Zealand market. In the rest of the World, it was available as a grey import.

In 2002, Nissan discontinued the S platform. The S15 Silvia was the final and last variant in the series, ending production. The sports platform was moved to the FM platform, which is used in the current Fairlady Z and the Nissan Skyline.

Nissan Silvia S15 Specs:

The Nissan Silvia S14 boasted an impressive 247 bhp of power and a peak torque of 203 ft/lb at 6,400 Rpm. The engine was codenamed the SR20DET, a powerful inline-four engine. The outstanding increase in power was partly due to the ball bearing upgrade in the turbocharger. And partly due to the new engine management system.

That along with the revamped design gave the S15 a huge edge over the rest of the competitors and rivals. The aggressive styling made it possible for it to match the trends and till date is sought after.

The Nissan Silvia S series utilizes the S chassis, which has been popular as a drift car. This means that the S15 Silvia has seen many motor sporting events. That can be attributed to the versatility of the S chassis as well as the huge aftermarket. The chassis has been used in many professional race cars and has won numerous lauds and competitions.

The S15 alone has won seven D1 Prix championships, with five different drivers. In 2018, at the PRO championship, drift driver James Deane won the competition using the Silvia S15.

Nissan Silvia S15 Price:

In the beginning, the cost of the Nissan S15 was around $42,000 for the base six-speed manual Spec S. And around $47,000 for the four-speed auto transformation made sure about Spec R. The 200SX evaluated Porsche's inside and out. And was relatively exorbitant, front-engine 968 models that were suspended during the 1990s.

Final Verdict:

There is no doubt that the S15 is outstanding amongst other drifting vehicles out there, even in the present day. With an incredible engine and outstanding exterior lightweight case. Some basic redesigns can make this a fantasy vehicle to drive. Indeed, a Nissan Silvia S14 modified version would easily beat the likes of the sports vehicles which are available today.

They can make reasonable day by day drivers, in spite of the fact that there is a genuinely restricted measure of back legroom, particularly with reseller's exchange seats. So, in the event that you had intended to make this your next family vehicle, you might need to rethink. Especially taking into consideration how long your child's legs are!
