Getting an Australian Driver’s License: Everything You Need to Know

Australian drivers license

Having a driver's license in Australia comes in handy all the time. After all, being able to drive lets you go to any place, anytime you want without having to wait for a taxi or a bus. It also gives you a higher level of safety, especially when you are going out alone.

In Australia, getting a driver’s license varies from one state to another. The amount of time needed to obtain a license also depends on the age and skills of the applicant. A young driver might take more time, while an immigrant with a foreign license might take less.

The Driver Knowledge Test

The Driver Knowledge Test (DKT) is the first in a series of tests that you have to take to get your Australian driver’s license. This multiple-choice exam is based on theoretical knowledge. Passing this part of the process allows you to get a learner’s permit.

After passing the DKT, student drivers are issued an L-plate. Having an L-plate means that student drivers can take actual driving lessons on the road.

The Hazard Perception Test

The Hazard Perception Test (HPT) is a touch-screen test that will measure your ability to identify road risks and dangerous situations while driving. It will also test how you’ll respond to such hazards.

The HPT is usually more difficult than the DKT. But thanks to technology, having a hazard perception test practice is just a few clicks or taps away. Many websites now allow you to practice answering real HPT questions

However, the number of questions and the duration of the test may vary by state. Student drivers in New South Wales have to take the appropriate hazard perception test NSW practice and NSW hazard perception test. In NSW, the hazard perception test practice NSW is pretty accessible, which is the main reason why student drivers there easily pass the hazard perception test NSW.

The same thing goes for those in Southern Australia. They have to take the hazard perception test SA. Meanwhile, those in Western Australia have to take the hazard perception test WA.

Practical Driving Assessment

The Practical Driving Assessment (PDA) is the most difficult out of the three mentioned in this article. Much practice and skill are needed to pass this assessment since the one evaluating you is actually next to you. The PDA will evaluate your skills in terms of your general driving abilities, driving attitude, observation skills, parking skills, ability to deal with hazards & risky situations, among others.

The PDA usually comes in handy for foreigners who have acquired their licenses overseas. It’s because they can skip the process for obtaining the probationary license and take the PDA as soon as they’re ready. However, the Australian government has a list of eligible countries for that. If you are not from one of the eligible countries, then you have to start from scratch. Lastly, it’s important that the car you use in this test is definitely ready for driving.
